How to Cook Steamed Mussel Recipe

These steamed mussels are simple, elegant, and delicious! They are perfect for any dinner party and you won’t be able to stop after one!

I love recipes that I can surprise my guests with! These mussels do just that. If you’re wondering what other sides to serve with this, try this garlic bread, these potato wedges, or a fried  French baguette!

If you’re wondering what mussels are and how they taste, I’m here to tell you! Mussels are similar in texture and taste to shellfish and oysters. They look trendy, but they are some of the easiest seafood to prepare! The outside is usually dark black or blue, and the inside is cream or pink. On the outside, they have something called a “beard” – this is a thin vein that needs to be pulled out before cooking!

Now that you know what mussel is, the fun part is to find out what it tastes like! They have a mushroom texture. It is hard but soft at the same time. It doesn’t have a fishy taste at all, it just has a salty taste. The texture should never be rubbery … So they were overcooked! Since the aroma of the mussels is light in themselves, they take on the flavor of the aroma in which you cook them! These mussels are SO GOOD. You just need to try them and find out! Combine them with crostini,  fried asparagus,  and pesto for a  delicious meal!

What you need to Steamed Mussel

You only need a couple of ingredients to steam Mussels! See the Recipe Card below for a list of the exact ingredient sizes.

  • Mussels: the key to this recipe! Below I have posted a few tips on how to choose them in the store.
  • Chicken Broth:  I used chicken broth instead of water for more flavor when steamed!
  • White Wine: The alcohol will brew, but it will add a delicious flavor to the recipe!

Now that you know all about mussels, it’s time to cook them! It will only take you about 20 minutes, and then you will understand why they are so difficult to resist!

Prepare mussels

Clean and remove the beard:  rinse them in cold water right before cooking. If the shell is open, press it to close it before steaming. Check if you need to remove the beard from them. It looks like a small tag on the side of the case. Pull your beard out tightly.

Add broth and wine to the pot:

Preparation:  Cook in a medium saucepan, then add chicken stock and white wine. Bring to a boil and let the alcohol evaporate.

Add mussels

  1. Add mussels:  Add to boiling water and cover to evaporate. Cook for 5 minutes, then remove the lid and check to see if they are open. If they haven’t opened yet, close the lid and cook for another minute. Discard the mussels with the shells that have not yet opened.
  2. ServeServe as desired.

How to collect mussels

It is important to know what to look for when buying mussels. This will make or break your recipe. Here are some tips to help make this part of the process easier!

  • Where can I find mussels? You can find them on the seafood counter at your local grocery store!
  • How much should I get? It depends on whether you serve it as a main course, side dish, or appetizer. The recommended amount for the main course is £ 1 per person!
  • How to choose which ones to buy? You should look for farm-raised mussels. These types are always a good choice because the quality is better.
  • Buy Extra: When you buy mussels, they will always be cracked or dead. So buy some more so you don’t worry!

How to store mussels until you cook them

Did you know mussels are alive when you bought them? This means that you need to have a plan of what to do with them in between when you plan to cook them! Dead mussels are nauseous, so follow these tips … They are very important!

  • In the refrigerator:  Your mussels will be in a mesh bag. Keep them there until you cook.
  • Keep them cold and damp:  You can wrap the bag in a damp paper towel to keep them moist in the refrigerator. This is the key!
  • DO NOT store them in water or a sealed bag:  since they are alive, they need to breathe!
  • How long can I keep them? Thus, you can store mussels for no more than 24 hours. The fresher they are, the better they are!

How to clean them

Whenever you work with seafood, it is important to know how to peel it safely! Here are some tips on how to peel mussels.

  • Don’t soak them:  just rinse them well with cold water. No need for soaking.
  • Scrub:  If there is dirt on the mussel, scrub the shells with a brush or fingernails to remove the dirt.
  • Debord: If your mussels have sticky marks attached to the outside of the shell, remove them before cooking. To remove it, pull it towards the hinge of the case. COOKING COOKING COOKING ONLY. After removing the beard, the mussels will only have a few minutes to live. Only do this when you are ready to cook them right away!

How to store leftover food

Steamed mussels are delicious on leftover food. Here’s how to store them safely so you can eat them later!

  • Refrigerator:  Once cool, place the mussels in an airtight container in the refrigerator. They will be enough for 3-4 days!
  • Freezer:  If you want to freeze steamed mussels, you need to wait for them to cool down. Then place them in an airtight container or freezer bag. (Be sure to mark it with the date!) They will last 2-3 months in the freezer.
  • Reheating: If frozen, thaw them in the refrigerator overnight. After thawing, place the mussels in the microwave and cover. Cook for about 30 seconds or until warm. Enjoy!

Right before you Steamed Mussel. Rinse them in cold water. If the shell is open, press it to close it before steaming. Check to see if the mussels need to be deburred. It looks like a small tag on the side of the case. Pull your beard hard.
